5 up football

ABOUT 5 UP FOOTBALL

5UP Football is a safer approach to the game that preserves the tradition and spirit of the sport, with truly little contact and no taking of a player to the ground. The defender must track and engage with proper form tackling technique while touching the ball carrier with two hands to the hip which is simulating an actual tackle. With this approach, players break down, load up their hips to make contact. A safer environment is maintained as the players stay on their feet rather than taking them to the ground.

The 5UP Football League reserves the right to modify, add, or remove rules as they deem fit for the improvement or safety of the league at any point during the season.

Starting of the Game:  For the safety of the players and fair competition, each team must field Seven players at the start of the game.

Forfeit: A forfeit will be called if a team cannot field Seven players at the start of each game.

Offense: The Offense will field Eight Players as the Quarterback cannot advance the ball.

The visiting team shall take possession of the ball at the five (5) yard line to start the game.

The offensive team shall consist of five (5) skilled position players on the field (Up) a Quarterback and Two (2) down lineman.

Offensive Positions: The offense positions will consist of two (2) Offensive Lineman, one (1) Quarterback, (1) Running Back and four (4) eligible receivers. (Note the Running back may also receive the ball.)

Offensive Line: The Offensive Lineman are the players on the line of scrimmage whose primary purpose is to pass block. This player must start in either a three (3), point or two (2) point stance.

Offensive Series: Each offensive down is started by the following scenario's. By the Quarterback picking the ball up from the ground, a direct snap from either lineman by shot gun or underneath and finally by the quarterback placing the ball on the small of a lineman’s back and then pick it up. Any one of these motions will simulate the start of the play.

Offensive Line Alignment: The Offensive Lineman must line up a minimum of six (6) feet apart and must remain on the line of scrimmage. His purpose is to pass block or one down per series run block.

Quarterback Alignment: Quarterback is positioned behind the offensive linemen.

Advancing the Ball: The ball can only be advanced by way of a pass or handoff directly from the Quarterback.   The Receivers and Running Back are eligible to advance the ball only by a direct pass or handoff from the Quarterback.

Running the Ball: The ball can be handed off behind the line of scrimmage one (1) time per series. Achieving a first down constitutes a new series.

Offensive Formations: There are various acceptable formations, all offensive lineman are on the line of scrimmage along with two (2) eligible receivers (all covered rules apply).  One offensive lineman may be eligible, once the offense is in the Red Zone. Only one (1) but not both may declare eligibility to the game official and deemed eligible. The Redzone is defined as five yards or less from the goal line. Although one offensive lineman may declare eligible, he is not required to go out for a pass. All receivers and running backs remain eligible through all downs in accordance with National High School Federation Rules. The principals of one (1) Offensive Lineman, one (1) Quarterback, one (1) Running Back and Four (4) Receivers make up the base offensive structure. All basic football rules apply to eligible receivers and covered ends. Which means all receivers on the eligible lineman’s side must be off the ball.

Coaching: The only coaches on the field or sideline are those which are part of the official team roster. If, at ANY TIME, an individual is discovered on the sideline who is not a coach on the official team roster the team will incur the following consequences:

1.  First offenses by a team will result in an official warning to the team.

2. Second offenses will result in suspension of the individual at fault as well as the Head Coach from the next game of play.

3.  Third offenses will result in suspension of the Head Coach indefinitely and removal of the team from post-season and or championship play. Any further offenses will result in the team’s removal from the league and or tournament.

4.  Only One Offensive coach is permitted on the field and must be five yards behind the furthest offensive player behind the line of scrimmage or on the sideline and off the field of play.

5.  Only one defensive coach is permitted on the field, however that defensive coach must be at the back of the endzone prior to the ball being snapped into play or on their sideline and off the field of play.

6.  No one other than coaches, players are allowed on the field before, during, or post-game.

Defense:

Defense: The defensive team shall consist of Five (5) skilled position players on the field (Up) and two (2) down linemen.

Defensive Formations: A team may use any defensive formation if there are two (2) down linemen.   Two (2) defensive players must be on the line of scrimmage in a three (3) point stance within two (2) feet of the offensive lineman to start each offensive down. The primary purpose of these players is to pass rush the Quarterback or stop the running back should he attempt to run.   These players must always move forward, in an attempt, to sack the Quarterback.

Pass Drop Defensive Lineman: The only exception for the Defensive lineman to drop into coverage after the snap of the ball is if the Offensive Lineman releases across the line of scrimmage while in the Red Zone to become an eligible receiver.

Defensive Alignment: ALL defensive linemen must be in a down position – 3-point stance and within one (1) foot of the offensive lineman. Lining Head up on an offensive lineman is permitted. In all defensive formations, the Defensive Lineman’s initial position must be within one (1) foot of the down offensive lineman.

Blitzing: All non-defensive linemen, i.e., Linebackers, Corners, Safety’s cannot move forward until the snap of the ball and cannot rush the Quarterback on a pass play.   NO BLITZING is permitted.

A blitz is defined as a non-defensive linemen penetrating the line of scrimmage during play where the Quarterback is passing the ball. Specifically, the only defensive player that can penetrate beyond the line of scrimmage is the defensive lineman as identified above. Non-defensive linemen can either have pass coverage or “spy” responsibility on the Quarterback in the event the Quarterback hands the ball to an eligible receiver, but those players cannot penetrate the line of scrimmage until the hand off attempt is made. 5UP Football’s goal is for the protection of the Quarterback, so the “no blitzing” rule is necessary for safety and to encourage the passing game.  "Blitzing" is permitted if someone other than the QB has the ball in their possession behind the line of scrimmage. The QB is defined as the first player that touches the ball immediately after a snap. When the Quarterback “fakes” a handoff, non-defensive linemen cannot "blitz", however they can step forward initially to stop the advance of the ball. For 5P Football, a pass play occurs when:

(1) The Quarterback is in possession of the football after the initial snap,

(2) The Quarterback has not transferred the ball to another player.

(3) The Quarterback has not crossed the line of scrimmage.

Ball on the ground: When the ball touches the ground, it is dead, even if the Quarterback can recover the ball the non-defensive linemen cannot rush after the ball once it touches the ground.

Player Considered Down: An eligible receiver is considered down once a defender has touched the offensive player with two hands below the chest.

Time: 5Up football game clock shall consist of two (2), twenty-two (22) minute halves with a running time clock, with a three (3) minute break between halves. The clock will automatically stop with a one (1) minute remaining for the “one (1) minute warning”. During the regular season and or Tournament Seeding Rounds there is no overtime. During the playoffs and or Tournament Elimination rounds, overtime will consist of each team having two plays from the half field mark. The team which advances the ball furthest in those two plays will be considered the winner.   Each team has one (1) time-out per half. If the time-out is not used in the first half, it will not carry over to the second half. Time-outs are clock stoppages. After thirty (30) seconds a whistle will blow, and the clock will automatically start.

Play Clock: Referees will be responsible for keeping the play clock of 25 seconds.  In the case of an injury the clock will stop for a maximum of two minutes at the discretion of the referee, depending on the game and schedule situation (two (2) minute stoppage is for the entire game). The injured player must be removed from the field of play and not participate for one (1) down.  Games may start up to five (5) minutes early if the field is available, in order to keep games on schedule throughout the day.

Forfeit Time and Forfeit Penalties: Game time is forfeit time; any team that forfeits a game the first time will pay a $50 forfeit fee a second forfeit by any team will result in an additional $75 forfeit fee. If a team does not pay their forfeit fee, they will be subject to disciplinary actions up to and including removal from the schedule for the remainder of the season and or tournament.

Player Arriving Late: A player arriving after the start of the clock must be listed on the opposing team’s roster and wait for halftime to participate in that game.  No player arriving after the start of the second half will be allowed to participate in the game.

Moving the Ball and Scoring

Moving the ball and Scoring: The offensive team has four (4) downs to advance the ball to midfield for a first down. If a team advances to midfield or further within four (4) downs, than that team is given an additional series made of four (4) downs to score.   Should a team fail to cross midfield within four (4) downs, thus not acquiring a first down, or in the case of earning a first down fail to score, then the ball will be placed on the five (5) yard line and the ball will be considered turned over on downs.

Turn Over: A turnover will be marked as a first down at the spot of the ball for the team awarded possession.

1. Six (6) points are awarded for a touchdown.

2. One (1) point conversion from the three (3) yard line.

3. Two (2) point conversion from five (5) yards.

Ball Placement: Each offensive possession will start with the ball in the center of the field. Any offensive player that is called down will require the ball for the next down the ball will be placed in the center of the field.

Stalling Rule: If, in the last three (3) minutes of the game, If the winning team is on offense and commits two penalties of any kind (offsides, unsportsmanlike conduct, etc.) the ball will be immediately given to the opposing team on the five (5)-yard line.

Stalling Rule (Defense) In the last three (3) minutes of the game, if the winning team is on defense and commits a penalty it will be assessed as normal; however, if a second penalty incurs prior to the offense running a play the ball will be placed at midfield with four (4) downs to score if time permits (or assessed at one third the distance from the goal with four (4) downs to score if time permits, if the ball has already crossed mid-field). If a third penalty is incurred prior to the offense running a play the ball will be placed on the five (5)-yard line with four downs to score if time permits.
